Jones Day Partners Receive "Dealmakers of the Year" Honorable Mention for General Motors Pension Plan Transaction

Evan Miller, a partner in global law firm Jones Day's Washington Office, and Peter Izanec, a partner in the Firm's Cleveland Office, were singled out for recognition in The American Lawyer's annual "Dealmakers of the Year" awards, announced in the April issue.

They were recognized for advising General Motors LLC on a transaction announced on June 1, 2012 that eliminated approximately $26 billion in GM balance sheet liability and resulted at closing in the largest single-employer plan termination and pension risk transfer in U.S. history. This continues the Firm's tradition of advising GM on ground-breaking employee benefits matters, including GM's creation of a retiree health VEBA trust. The transaction involved the General Motors Retirement Program for Salaried Employees, under which approximately 118,000 former salaried GM employees received pensions. The Firm followed up the GM transaction by representing Verizon Communications later in 2012 in connection with a similar pension risk transfer transaction.

Mr. Miller, who co-chairs the Firm's Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation Practice, provides employee benefits counsel and represents companies in complex ERISA matters and litigation.

Mr. Izanec, a member of the Firm's Mergers & Acquisitions Practice, represents companies and private equity funds in a wide variety of mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, spin-offs, joint ventures, corporate financings, proxy contests, and corporate governance matters.
